The Crisis Intervention Team model, initially developed in Memphis, began locally with the Lee's Summit Police Department in 2000, but by 2011, had increased to most municipalities throughout the metro area. The training is for officers to interact with individuals with mental illness and relies on enhanced partnerships between law enforcement and mental health care providers to improve outcomes for individuals, family members, and communities.
