In 2002, Health Midwest, a regional nonprofit health care provider which owned or leased 11 general acute care and mental health centers in Missouri and Kansas, entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). The Attorneys General of Kansas and Missouri secured the assets from the sale and established two, healthcare conversion foundations – the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and the REACH Healthcare Foundation. The two foundations began officially grantmaking in 2005, both in the same, six county service area, both with similar missions to improve health for the uninsured and underserved.
